SKIPPER FEARED LOST
One of Aberdeen's best known trawl skippers is feared to have been lost at sea. He is Mr. William McPherson, 204 Victoria Road. Mr. McPherson has a family of nine daughters, three of whom are married and three are at school. A native of Whinnyfold, Mr. McPherson, who is fifty years of age, has been at sea since he was nineteen. He has been a skipper for twenty years, but it was only within the last year that he transferred from line fishing to trawling. During the last war Mr. McPherson was first engaged on patrol work and then as a pilot skipper at Lerwick.

The Oriole was originally one of the large fleet belonging to Kelsall Brothers, Beeching Ltd. of Hull, all named after birds, and was registered as H926. She was taken up by the Admiralty in October 1914 and served as a minesweeper till 1919. She was bought by Skipper William McPherson in 1935 and used as a steam line fishing vessel. She struck a mine 2 miles north of Stakken-North Point, Faroe, and was lost, with her whole crew of ten.
