Somewhere to turn to.

Ever since the foundation was launched in 1991 the array of activities has expanded.

First of all Ulla-Brita started collecting clothes and money to help the women and children who lived at the dump outside Quito.

Rather soon she got her vision of help to self-help. However, there had to be some basic conditions fulfilled. The primary issue was to help the children by building a nursery where they could stay instead of having the dump as a playground. The nursery, containing a kindergarten and a department for newborn babies, has room for one hundred children.

The next step was to create sewing facilities for the women.

There were three ambitions connected with this plan:

To provide the women with an education to enable them to earn a living away from the dump.

To provide the women with a possibility to earn a living from their own work.

The produce from the sewing should in the long-term help finance the teaching by getting commissions from outside.

In the year 2001 the medical center was finally finished. Living at the dump and from garbage entails a health threat. Many women and children are also exposed to violence from men.

The Center was built through financial support from Rotary Göteborg (Sweden) and Rotary International with a Matching Grant. .

The center now also proudly houses a dental care service.

Ulla-Brita has a vision of helping the women to better living standards in regular houses.
