The Medical Center
|
Since the start in 1992 the activities have increased.
From the very beginning one doctor and one dentist (both of them women) offered their services to the Center informing and helping the women of the dump.
They are among other things informed about basic nutrition and birth control.
It has been very successful and the number of births has decreased since the Center was established.

As the activities expanded at the Center the lack of space became imminent.
However help was at hand. A Matching Grant Contribution from Rotary Göteborg and Rotary International was given and it was possible to build the Medical Center, that was finished and inaugurated in 2001.
There are six Specialist Consultants with seven competent staff members, lead by Dr. Aurelio Fuentes, Head Doctor at the Center.
The Center offers treatment to children suffering from malnutrition or other medical problems that need attention. Once a week vaccinations are performed and all children get their dental treatment in the Center.
The need of equipment and financial support is presented to Ulla-Brita who provides accordingly in consultation with Dr. Recalde.
The Medical Health Center
now comprise the following:
WOMEN'S CLINIC - GYNAECOLOGY, OBSTETRIC.
The Center now offers Gynecology and Obstetrics services.
The equipment is complete with operation table and instruments for examination and treatment. The women receive informed about birth control and venereal diseases.
Dr. Aurelio Fuentes is the doctor in charge.
CHILD CARE CLINIC - PEDIATRIC.
The clinic checks the children's weight, length and condition. They treat
the children from the Day Nursery but also children brought by mothers
visiting the Center.
Clinical tests has shown infections, blood and iron deficiency,
malnutrition and parasites. Mainly because scarcity of food and poor hygiene
at home.
Special educational programs has been launched
to improve hygiene in the family's daily life.
Continuous vaccinations are done against hepatitis, inflammations
etc. Head of the clinic is Dr Lucia Careres.
LABORATORY.
The laboratory is today equipped with well needed
equipment
for examinations
and controls.
Regular examinations and follow ups has been done through blood and urine samples,
mainly from the children at the Day Nursery. A high frequency of anemia,
parasites and other pathological disease has been
established.
The work is done
in cooperation with pediatric examinations
and controls.
Head of the laboratory is Dr Santiago Cisnerus.

THE NURSE'S OFFICE
Licensed nurse Jacqueline Zumarraga is responsible for the nurse's office. She
is academically trained, specialized in generic health treatment. She
assist in all activities at the Center.
Helps the personal with advice and guidance,
gives injections, treat smaller injuries and check blood pressure.
She is also responsible for maintaining and compiling the Center's statistics.

PHARMACY.
The pharmacy has medicines, vaccines etc. for the patients' needs.

DENTIST -
ODONTOLOGI
All dental equipment is a grant from Ale Rotary Club (Sweden)
The ward has a complete set of equipment with patient
chair complemented with x-ray, compressors, light, sterilizers and
disposables.
The treatments
comprise examinations, treatments, fillings, dental replacement
and tooth extraction. Also preventive care and dental hygiene instructions.

A number of women from the garbage dump had got full
denture. The children at the Day Nursery get
regular treatments and are taught about dental care.
Responsible dentist is Dr Morayama Borja.
LAUNDRY
A room equipped with washing machines to wash the sheets, towel and other
textiles used by the Center.
COMPUTERS
A modern computer with necessary equipment was obtain to work with the
accounts, annual reports, patient files and statistic .
A special health project has been carried out for the children at the nursery, including health controls and malnutrition treatments together with an activity stimulation program. The project received a financial grant from Queen Silvia World Childhood Foundation.
Laboratory analysis were made for diagnosis and check-up of the state of there health, dental hygiene, a complete vaccination program, treatment of detected ailment, addition of proteins, vitamins and minerals. The examinations and treatments where done by the medical personal at the Center.
The periodical health and nutrition controls gave positive results. The Center observed improvement in the children's condition, a reduction of anemia through iron addition, elimination of internal parasites, better dental hygiene through odontological treatment and education.
A continuous follow-up of the project is planed. |
